Mobile Site or Mobile App – Which Comes First?
I find as I talk to business owners about both the possibilites and the necessity of moving their business into the mobile arena that there are so many choices to consider many folks feel overwhelmed.
It’s true that there are a ton of ways to market with mobile. For starters there’s mobile search and mobile ads which run on those networks (translate ppc). Email marketing is still good for mobile and then there’s the bell and whistles of mobile marketing that really get us distracted.
QR codes (2d codes or barcodes for mobile) are new and flash. There are mobile apps grabbing attention left and right, and of course social media is huge and is definitly being accessed on mobile phones. What should you focus on?
What we tell customers is to start with a mobile site. It is the foundation stone for anything you do mobile anyway. You want to send any leads you get when doing mobile marketing to a mobile optimized and friendly site, right?
The best way to do that is to focus on getting a mobile site up and then branch out into other aspects of mobile marketing. Of course, you have to always consider your target audience and what they need and want when they come to your site, but that’s a topic for another time.
I also find that many small businesses, or large ones for that matter, are lost when it comes to honing in on their marketing message. This makes app development almost impossible. If you start with figuring out what your mobile users want from your site, and honing in better then on your mobile audience, app development will be much easier, I’m just saying. You’ll know better what they want – which is what an app is for, right?
Below you will find a discussion on this topic that may have a different opinion than mine (since they are promoting apps 🙂 But whichever one of us you chose to side with do something related to mobile. Get going towards this arena because a good third of your customers need you to and want you to. Quit leaving money on the table and start devising and implementing your mobile strategy today.
“It can be argued that having a mobile site is the better way forward for many companies, at least when they are first making the move towards attracting mobile users, which is reflected in the fact that many of the online gaming companies have …”
