Mobile Optimized Sites – Web Sites Don’t Cut It Any More
Having a mobile optimized sites are no longer optional. You are missing out on putting your message in front of nearly half your customers if you don’t have a mobile friendly site. They are spending money, and if you aren’t putting your business in front of them, you aren’t going to get any of that pie.
How big is that pie? Well, look at this graphic from Nielson. This compares the TV Universe to the Mobile Universe. The fact is that there are more mobile phones than credit cards. Let that sink in. There are more mobile phones than cars; seriously. There are more mobile phones than computers. Think about that. More mobile phones than land line phones, or words in the Oxford Dictionary.

Note that the mobile phone web users is almost as large as the entire television universe! That’s huge. Forget TV! At least for now. Local business’s best bet is to have mobile optimized sites.
No device in history has been so quickly embraced as the mobile phone. In some countries there are more mobile phones than there are people. It’s not a fad. It’s not going away.
Additionally, in the US more than 30% of all cell phone users have smartphones, and the number is growing. Not only did we adapt to the cell phone quickly, we jumped right on to the next wave of technology, the smart phones. And the number is growing.
You can’t connect offline and online without mobile. You have to consider mobile as a marketing channel. You simply have to be present with mobile optimized web sites.
Most local businesses consider tv to be the mecca of advertising. They start with either newspaper ads or trade journal ads and most likely a yellow pages ad because that’s what they’ve been taught. If they are half-way hip, they have a website of some kind, though they don’t realize the true potential online or are not pursuing it. Notice that the mobile universe is bigger than tv, and is more personal. That’s a huge advantage over tv.
Those that still consider tv to be the end-all-be-all of business promotion don’t understand that they are way behind and really need to run to catch up. Mobile is now where nearly half of all searches take place. A mobile optimized site is the best and easiest way to put your business in front of nearly twice the customers it is reaching now.
40% of all searches done on Google are done on mobile phones. If your business isn’t in the list it doesn’t stand a chance. That’s 40% of all possible customers who cannot find you. The yellow pages is obsolete. It had a good run. Newspaper, obsolete. It had a good run.
Don’t misunderstand; news is great and worthwhile. But it has always existed to be the framework for a business that made money selling advertising. As an advertising medium it is over. That’s a blanket statement, which is always dangerous; and, for small select groups, especially those whose demographic group are seniors, the newspaper is still a possibly profitable channel. However, for the largest majority of people an online presence, and even more so a mobile presence, is a must.
The 40% statistic is new because just recently it was only 30% of all searches that were done on mobile devices. Very soon it will be 50%, and then 60%. There are more mobile phones than computers, so why wouldn’t there be more searches on it?
Small businesses have to understand this if they want to survive. It is also the largest potential growth arena for small and local business. Imagine getting a mobile site and nearly doubling your lead base just with that one effort.
If you don’t have a mobile site, or a mobile optimized site, you should consider it a huge priority for your business. I can’t stress that enough.
